Hemorrhoid Banding Patient Information

Hemorrhoid banding (also called rubber band ligation) is an office-based treatment used for internal hemorrhoids. During the procedure, a small band is gently placed around the hemorrhoid tissue to reduce its blood supply. The treated tissue typically shrinks and falls off naturally over the following days.

The procedure is quick, generally well tolerated, and does not require sedation. Most patients can return to normal light activities soon after, unless instructed otherwise.

Hemorrhoid banding is typically completed over 3 separate sessions, scheduled approximately 3 weeks apart. This staged approach allows the tissue to heal between sessions and helps deliver the best long-term results.

• The actual banding portion of the visit takes only a few minutes.
• You may feel pressure, mild discomfort, or the urge to have a bowel movement during or shortly after the procedure. This is normal and usually passes quickly.
• No sedation is needed, so you can drive yourself to and from the appointment.

After the banding session is completed, you will rest in the patient room for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This gives our staff time to make sure you feel okay before you leave the office.

• Mild discomfort, fullness, or the urge to have a bowel movement may persist for a few hours.
• Most patients can resume light, normal activities the same day.
• Your physician may provide additional aftercare instructions specific to your situation.
